Hybrid Vehicles In The Early Twenty-First Century.

Owen Jones | July 7, 2011

You would almost certainly be surprised to hear that hybrid cars have been with us since the very earliest days of automotive history, but you will not be astonished to be told that the technology has come on in leaps and bounds for the last ten years. In fact, the technology in hybrid cars has reached the level where fuel consumption in a hybrid can be half that of in a conventional internal combustion engine only car.

Half or even less than half under some circumstances like driving in town, especially in heavy traffic. In fact, while a hybrid is either cruising on electric or stopping and starting in thick traffic, there will be no consumption of petrol or diesel whatsoever, which means that you are driving ‘without cost’.

I put without cost in parentheses because a hybrid vehicle is still substantially dearer than a car with a traditional engine. However, even given the added cost of a hybrid vehicle, you can save that excess cost over the average life time of the vehicle because of the saving on fuel. Obviously, the higher the cost of fuel, the sooner you will recover your extra initial outlay on the price of the hybrid.

Maybe you are thinking that hybrid vehicle manufacturers are profiteering on the backs of car drivers who want to do their bit for the environment. Well, you would not be alone in thinking that, but the cost of developing hybrid technology was and still is costly and someone has to pay for it.

That means you and me, the end-users. Well, that is standard, yet in some countries, the government has stepped in to subsidize individuals who purchase a hybrid vehicle, because governments all around the world are under an obligation to reduce their country’s carbon footprint.

That means that now is as decent a time as any to purchase a hybrid vehicle.

There are other reasons why a hybrid is costly though. The hybrid actually has two engines. A hybrid has a traditional engine run on traditional fuels, and it also has an electric engine which runs off costly batteries. It is not that you have to replace the batteries as with a radio. The batteries are costly because they are very heavy duty rechargeable units.

The technology for recharging these batteries is also ground-breaking. The car uses traditional alternators to recharge them but it also uses braking power to recharge them too. Not just that but the car’s on board computer switches between the two motors automatically, depending on the quantity of power that is needed by the driver.

Keep an eye on the hybrid car market because prices are declining and coupled with subsidies, the time to purchase a hybrid car might come sooner than you think.

The Benefits Of An Auto Navigation System

Owen Jones | June 21, 2011

It seems that every new car you see these days has an auto navigation system. They are impressive too, there is no doubting that, but how many people utilize them to their full extent?

The initial navigation systems to become reasonably priced did not have maps and did not have voice instructions, but then they were for use by yachts men and women. They were also fitted in commercial vehicles fairly early on, but when they were first fitted into cars, it was only into the Bentleys and Ferraris of this world.

Now auto navigation systems are inexpensive enough to go in a Ford. And that is great, but they are still normally part of an upgrade package, which a lot of people do not really need, because they are too atechnical to get the most out of the sat nav.

If you travel long distances to different places on a normal basis, then an auto navigation system is very handy, but your employer has almost certainly already installed them in the fleet cars for the sales force. Likewise, an auto navigation system is very handy if you are lost, but how often do people go to places where they run the risk of getting lost?

It seems to me, that the best use of an auto navigation system to most people is to steer clear of traffic jams. However, this means sitting down with the instruction book and learning how to use the system correctly.

An auto navigation system can easily help you steer clear of such hazards as road blocks, traffic jams and accidents. If you ask it. It can also help you find routes to where you want to go that you would never have thought of even if you do know the area pretty well. If you know how to ask it.

It is a real shame that people buy this technology, or any other for that matter, in order to make an impression on their friends and never realize the full potential of what they have within their reach. OK, if you have more money than sense, you may think why not?

But the population of the planet is starting to think about excess and how we can save resources, so honestly you, the planet and everybody in it would be better off, if you did not squander your money, or worse still, get into debt just to show off. This is a warning sign of where we went wrong last time.

An auto navigation system can be a real boon because it can help you save fuel by choosing direct routes and also help unblock our roads by showing cars different routes. If you have an auto navigation system, learn how to use it and you will perceive the great features that are locked away inside that little box; but if you are buying a new car and you know that you will never be troubled to learn how to operate it, do everyone a favour and just do not have an auto navigation system fitted.

How The NASCAR Starting Order Is Determined

Owen Jones | May 21, 2011

All NASCAR races make use of NASCAR qualifying results to assist determine the starting positions of the vehicles in the race. However, it is not merely as simple as that because the starting positions are not only worked out by qualifying results.

Some starting positions are determined by previous results and a team?s standing, but in general, the qualifying results have the biggest effect on the starting positions of cars in a NASCAR race.

The starting positions for the qualifying races are determined by the luck of a draw or a sequence of draws. The order of the runs is from the lowest number to the highest with higher numbers having a slight advantage because the condition of the race track improves with usage. The more often it is used the faster the track becomes.

The NASCAR teams send out their vehicles one at a time based on the numbers that they drew in the random draw. Each car is permitted a predetermined length of track to get up to speed and as it flies over the starting line it gets a green flag to signal that the stop watch has started.

Each vehicle is allowed two laps to establish its speed; the faster time will be its entry into the qualifiers for the actual starting places. Drivers have different strategies for these two laps, but one common strategy is to make use of the exterior lane of the track for the first lap.

This allows the sports car to travel more distance and therefore warm up more. The second lap can then be raced along the fastest lines giving a lower qualifying time.

Another approach, albeit a less common one, is to give up the second lap because it lessens the stress on the vehicle giving it a better chance in the final, actual race. This is a dangerous strategy which not many drivers decide to undertake.

Qualifying results for NASCAR races are based exclusively on the length of time it takes to finish a lap. This clearly has to do with speed, but the actual highest speed over a short distance is not taken into account.

If there is a dead heat for a position, times are compared down to 0.001 (one-thousandth) of a second. If there is still a tie, then the winner is the driver with the highest number of points in the season so far.

The media has a tendency to describe racing results in miles per hour (MPH) which is certainly tracked, but it does not establish the winner. The winner is the one with the fastest lap time, which can also be converted into an overall speed.

Because the media give details of the results in this manner, the general public has a tendency to think that the vehicle achieving the highest MPH will be the winner, but that is false or at least not the whole truth.

Sometimes the qualifying rounds have to be postponed indefinitely, most often due to extreme weather conditions, then the NASCAR qualifying positions are based on the owner?s previous total of points.

Is It All Right To Download Computer Software From The Net?

Owen Jones | May 14, 2011

Do you ever wonder whether it is safe to download things off the Internet? I know that I am asked that question several times a month. The fact is, that it depends, like most solutions. It depends on two basic factors: how good your defences are and where you are downloading from.

You may be thinking: well, if my defences are decent, why would it matter where I download from and that is a decent question, but so is: what do you think of as good protection?

If your idea of good protection is a free version of Avira, then you are going to have trouble. One day or another you will have trouble, guaranteed. I can say that with my hand on my heart, because they have a paid version too. If the free version is as decent as the paid version, why do people pay?

Because they are stupid? I do not think so. By the way, I am not having a go at Avira! They give away a marvelous product and as long as you are cautious, it might be all you require. Avira and all the other good anti-virus software suites require a little help to keep you secure.

For example, they will need you to run a firewall at the same time and use an anti-spyware program on a regular basis. They will also need you to not put yourself at the greatest risk either by visiting a few kinds of sites and not opening attachments from people you do not trust.

If you run the free forms of these av software programs, you will notice that certain features like the firewall or and the email attachment scanner have been disabled. This is how you will pick up viruses. Another manner that you lay yourself open to problems is by downloading free utilities. These pieces of software almost always include tracking routines.

The software will work, but it will install a tracking cookie on your computer which will phone home each day to its boss and tell them where you have been searching, so that they can spam you with like things.

Porn sites are another good instance of dangerous web sites. You receive ‘free porn’, but they get your IP address and possibly your email address too, which means that they can either spam you themselves or and sell your email address on so that half the world can spam you.

So, free av software is OK, but you have to help it. On the other hand paid software from a dependable firm like Norton, Kaspersky and Nod, to name but a few, should take care of you without you having to do anything but pay and install and permit automatic updates. You can expect that from these companies and they are able to deliver that degree of protection for $50-60 a year and then you can download anything you like.

The Internet is very much a case of ‘you pays your money and you takes your choice’ and ‘free’ is certainly not always the best choice.

Memory Foam Pillows

Owen Jones | April 26, 2011

Nearly all people expend a third of their lives in bed. Everybody knows that. Eight hours at work, eight hours ‘at play’ and eight hours sleeping. We even say: ‘I have to get my eight hours beauty sleep’. I understand that some can do with less and that children, especially teenagers, it seems, need more. So, it makes sense to spend those eight hours a day, or night, as comfortably as you can, does it not?

After all, you would not want to work at a desk that was too low or too high and you would not like to walk around in shoes that pinched. It is the same. You need to have the tools that permit you to do the job as easily as possible and the tool for sleeping is a bed and its bedding.

In fact, the bed and the bedding should be chosen somewhat carefully if you are going to get the best night’s sleep possible, which means that no-one can purchase a bed for you and be sure of making the correct choices. There is more chance of getting it right with some materials than others and one of those materials is memory foam.

This is because memory foam moulds itself to the shape of a body by reacting to its heat and weight. It provides more support over a greater area than conventional materials, This is most important in the mattress and the pillow. Some people have to have or prefer a stiff or a soft mattress, that is personal preference, but the pillow is more universal.

All our heads and necks are pretty much the same. However, once again memory foam pillows are that little bit more adaptable to each individual’s characteristics. However, you would be wrong to suppose that all pillows are the same size like the traditional cotton sack filled with feathers or whatever. Foam, conventional or memory, can be cut to any shape and some people find wedge shaped pillows more comfortable.

Then some people prefer small pads for cushions and others prefer four foot bolsters. There are even sectional pillows made up of up to a dozen pieces that you can assemble into practically any design.

Memory foam pillows return to their original shape once you get off them. It might take an hour but that is why they are known as memory foam pillows. This means that they do not need fluffing up every now and again. Being inorganic, they are hypoallergenic, impervious to mildew and dust mite resistant, which will help a lot of allergy sufferers.

Memory foam pillows are comfortable for sleeping on your back or side. They are not the cheapest pillows on the market, but the price is coming down all the time and they will last quite a few years if you get a good one. See if one of your local retailers can show you a sample or even allow you a thirty day satisfaction warranty then you have no risk.
