Is It Sensible For An Expectant Mother To Be A Vegetarian?

Owen Jones | December 21, 2011

There is nothing per se wrong with following a vegetarian regime if you are going to have a baby. Whether you were a vegetarian before you became pregnant or you have decided to become a vegetarian now that you are pregnant, the issue is the same as that for all mothers-to-be: namely, to make sure that you and the baby have all the vitamins and nutrients that you both require.

This is a somewhat more difficult quest if you are just starting off down the vegetarian road because of your lack of knowledge, but it is not that hard. There is so much information on the Net and in books now, and the doctors will be monitoring you, so you ought not miss out on anything you both require.

Your baby will have to grow a few pounds of bones, so calcium is one of your foremost priorities yet it is also one of the nutrients that a non-vegetarian can leave meat to provide. If you are at the level of being a vegetarian where you eat meals of meat and three veg but without the meat, you must have a major rethink, and you could take supplements and eat tofu, broccoli and other dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and cabbage.

Vitamin D is simple, yet you do require a regular quantity of it. Our skin synthesizes Vitamin D from sunlight, so you need to go out in the sun for half an hour a day or more. However, it is no good going out in the midday sun with suntan lotion on.

It is better to go out in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less expected to burn you. It does not even have to be strong sunlight for your body to make Vitamin D.

Vitamin B12 is abundant in red meat, yet hardly present at all in plants. However, there are a few vegetable sources of vitamin B12: soya (tofu) is one of them and vitamin-enhanced vegetarian products (normally cereals) are another.

Even so, you will almost certainly have to take supplements to get enough vitamin B12 for an expectant mother. Luckily, your doctor will be keeping an eye on your Vitamin B12 levels and he or she will be able to advise you.

You will also require plenty of iron, which is also plentiful in meat, but also in numerous vegetables. You have to have iron to keep your blood in decent shape and a lack of iron shows itself as aenemia.

Again, dark green, leafy vegetables are the order of the day here as are beans, seeds and nuts. However, due to the quantity of iron that you will require, you may need supplements for this one too.

You require protein. A normal diet gets protein from dairy products like milk and cheese; from eggs and from meat and fish. You may or you may not be eating some of those products, but if you are not then you will have to derive your protein from somewhere else. Tofu is a good source of vegetable protein, but vegetable protein is a fairly difficult one to find if you do not like tofu.

You will require zinc which again is abundant in meat. If you are looking for a vegetable source there are lots in all manner of grains – all the different sorts of grains including those used for bread,

How To Use Anger Management To Prevent Violence At Home.

Owen Jones | November 24, 2011

How is anger management connected to domestic violence? Put simply, most people that abuse their partner in this type of situation, are angry due to an anti-social disorder in that person’s subconscious mind. Anger is one of the main characteristics of personality disorder, including paranoia, schizophrenia, schizoid, antisocial, psychopathic, histrionic and sociopathic personalities.

Many people that are abusive in relationships have anti-social personalities. The anti-social personality type of person often attacks when he or she is drunk or under the influence of some drug or other. This is not true in all cases of course, but it is true in most circumstances. Anti-social personality types often disregard rules and regulations and usually feel that they have the right to do so. Anti-social personality types are control freaks and if you do not allow their authority, they often vent their anger in a controlling or violent manner.

Anti-social types will often humiliate, intimidate, brutally physically abuse and mentally belittle their spouse, but the domestic abuse does not usually stop there. This type of individual has never proven to be likely to respond to anger management techniques. In other words, men that batter their wives will usually continue to do so until someone gets seriously injured. It is not a good idea to get involved with this type of person, as there is rarely any hope at all of them controlling their anger. This type will often beat a spouse, until they only want to kill them. This means someone could die, since this sort of person will become angrier and angrier as the years pass and will rarely seek anger management help with their domestic violence.

Even if he or she does get anger management help for domestic violence, it often fails. It is not recommended to start a relationship with this type of person. The signs are an unkempt appearance or wild expressions, laughing for no apparent purpose, laughing at a situation where a person was humiliated, outbursts of anger for no reason et cetera. This type of person is superficial and will often lead you to believe that he or she is a model to society, when behind closed doors the brute appears.

Of course, hatred is the underlying cause of this person’s anger, and hate has been proven to kill. Often deep-seated jealousy also underlies the anger issues within these types of people. Many of these angry people take drugs, including cocaine, crack, marijuana and others. They often exceed the safety limit of alcohol consumption and this only increases the odds of them flying into a rage.

An example of bad anger management and domestic violence can be seen in a small town called Dowagiac in Michigan, a man tried to kill several women but was still allowed to go free. Little anger management help was provided to this person and often his furious attacks were simply because he felt that he could not control his victims. The victims were left without justice and a few even believed that they could change his angry ways.

Within a short time, he was sitting in the county gaol on a number of charges, including assault of a police officer and hit and run. The police, according to witnesses, claim that the criminal had had a weapon and was drunk when he tried to elude arrest and marijuana was found in his vehicle. This person had a long-standing record of violence but the justice system let those victims down, which led to more anger management problems.

Another example of anger is in borderline personality types. These people, when feeling abandoned, will attack others. Sometimes they are physically abusive, but most of the time they are verbally and mentally abusive. The spouse has only to go to work and when he or she returns home, they will be accused of doing something wrong.

The abusive person with anger management problems might even call the workplace of the partner numerous times to check that he or she is not spending time with someone else. This is another type of domestic violence from an angry person that seldom gets better, and like the anti-social personality types, these people are dangerous and manipulative.

Paranoid personality types are also dangerous and manipulative but their anger is almost impossible to predict. In most cases, these types react to voices heard inside or outside their head. Like the antisocial types, the paranoid type rarely has justifiable reason for their behaviour. Usually, it is merely a control issue. This means that if the victim is uncontrollable, the paranoid person will react angrily and violently.

What Is Clinical Depression?

Colin Jones | August 3, 2010

Depression is a mental disorder that is quite often characterized by lengthy periods of sadness and melancholy, say the experts from the field of psychiatry.

But just because a person is moping around and generally hating the world around him or her, doesn’t mean that he/she is suffering from depression, but if this kind of behavior, the feeling of emptiness, loss of self-worth and absolutely no hope for happiness just goes on and on, then, that individual is probably, indeed, depressed. Still, there are various types of depression too.

Manic or Bipolar depression is characterized by sudden and extreme mood swings – one minute the person is euphoric while the next minute (day or week), the same person feels as if he or she is hell.

Postpartum depression is characterized by a protracted sadness and a lengthy feeling of emptiness by a new mother where physical stress during child birth, an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born child can be just some of the possible reasons why some new mothers go through this.

Dysthimia – characterized by a slight similarity with depression, although this time, it’s been proven to be a lot less severe, but of course with any case of illness, should be seen to immediately.

Cyclothemia is characterized by only a nominal similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the sufferer of this mental disease has a problem with rapid changes in mood.

Seasonal Affective Disorder – characterized by being depressed only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn). However, studies prove that more people actually become ill during the Winter and Fall seasons. Or they could suffer from mood swings, wherein a person’s mood may shift from happy to sad to angry in quite a short time.

‘Clinical depression’ or ‘major depression’, as some call it, is the actual medical term for depression. Actually, clinical depression is more a disorder than an illness, because it refers to those who suffer from the symptoms that cause depression.

However, in spite of being an actual disorder, clinical depression can be treated. Doctors are usually highly optimistic that patients suffering from clinical depression will soon be well on their way to good mental health as long as they are treated as soon as they have been diagnosed. Patients who have sought treatment for clinical depression have proven to be quite successful in their quest, given that 80 percent of those treated have found relief from their disorder.

If you are seeking answers to questions related to clinical depression, the depression section of the health center is highly recommended, as well as books on psychiatry and the Internet, which offers a lot of helpful information, although self medication is very much disapproved of. Clinical depression may not pose as much of a threat as the other types of mental illness, but it is best to leave to the professionals who can safely attend to and cure this disorder.

The medical profession now recognizes the link between anger and depression, discover more on our siteat Treating Depression Also published at What Is Clinical Depression?.

The Ancient History Of Barry, South Wales: Part Two

Owen Jones | June 16, 2010

Barry Castle belonged to William de Barri in the 12th. Century, but was destroyed by Llewellyn Bren in 1316. Some say it was later rebuilt and used by the Cavaliers only to be destroyed again by the Roundheads, never to be reconstructed.

The Normans were hated by the locals and they had to build large mansions to protect themselves from the frequent attacks carried out on them from the people of the valleys and mountains. During the time of Henry III, there were 12 castles within six miles of Barry. In Glamorgan, there were 30 castles and in south Wales as a whole, 150.

Porthkerry and the church to its west is said to have taken its name from Ceri, who, it is said, founded a port ‘Port Ceri’. It is believed that Ceri ap Caid, the King of Essyllwg, lived in Porthkerry before the Christian era. His bard, Corvinor, is stated to have been the first to have built a ship with sails and a rudder for the race of Cymru. Some believe that Ceri was a nephew or grandson of Caractacus (Caradog) and that he assumed the head of government in south Wales when Caractacus was sent to Rome.

John Wesley preached in the Porthkerry Church and sometimes outside in the churchyard too between 1741 and 1743. Today, there are two very old churches still in use in Barry: St. Cadocs Church in Cadoxton and Merthyr Dyfan Church in Merthyr Dyfan. One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, Cadoxton was the largest village in the Barry area: thus, in 1844 the Parliamentary register contained 25 names: 20 from Cadoxton and five from Barry. The one church was dedicated to St. Cadoc, who had been accustomed to spend Lent on Flat Holm and Barry Island. The village (Cadoc’s Town)took its name from the church, which was founded in 800 AD.

Merthyr Dyfan Church, situated in the north of Barry, was founded in 600 AD and the name means Dyfan The Martyr. There were two saints of this name: one journeyed to Barry to convert the inhabitants to Christianity; the second lived in the Sixth Century and was the son of a Welsh chieftain. His sister was also martyred and the town of Merthyr Tydfil is named after her.

The Christian faith grew exponentially in the Vale of Glamorgan and in the middle of the 2nd. Century, Llewrwg, Prince of Siluria, became the first king, anywhere in the world of all time, to be baptized into the Christian faith. He sent to Rome for more Chritian teachers and was sent Dyfan and Fagan. The former was martyred near the site of the church and the latter was canonized. St. Fagan’s just outside Cardiff was named after him.
