How To Go About Buying A Computer

Owen Jones | June 22, 2010

As with everything else, buying a computer is straightforward if you know what you are doing. For those who do not know though, it can be a total nightmare. People who have used a computer before have a good idea about what they require and what they want, but for those who have never used a computer before, all the components that make up a computer can appear bewildering.

The obvious answer is to purchase the best that you can afford, but this still might puzzle some people, because the best is not always the most expensive. In the computer world, ‘the best’ normally means the biggest and the fastest.

Just to make it more perplexing, ‘the biggest’ here does not always mean in size, but in capacity. The only large size that is important is the monitor. This is a quick rundown of how to buy a computer and its components:

Before you buy a computer, think about why you want one. If it is for educational purposes: that is surfing the web and looking up content, you do not have to have more than a basic desktop computer. If you are constantly on the move, then you might require a laptop, or maybe cyber cafes will meet your requirements.

This kind of machine is also sufficient for writing letters and emails and almost any type office work. Top flight computers are only required by games players and exhibitionists.

Purchase a complete computer. That means acquiring a kit of: CPU (the ‘computer’), monitor (screen), keyboard, mouse, speakers and printer. This way you will just have to plug everything in and off you go – you can be sure that they are all well-matched.

When you buy your next computer, you can buy all the components individually to get even better value for money or a system more precisely customized to your preferences.

Go for the largest screen, the fastest memory and fastest hard drive and the biggest memory (RAM) and biggest hard drive (gigabytes) that you can afford. You do not have to have a great deal of ‘space’ for normal office work or normal surfing, but if you get into downloading music or films, then memory soon gets eaten up, although you could always add a new external (plug-in) hard drive later, in need be.

Make sure that you buy a computer that is not too old, if you go second-hand. This is because you can up-grade computers for two or three years, but after that manufacturers change the casings and new components will no longer fit – planned obsolescence, it is called.

Get your computer from a well-known, reliable local store and make sure that it has a good guarantee. Computers do not often go amiss, but you do not want to have to send it half-way across the country and wait three weeks for it to come back. If you are in business, get two. Perhaps a laptop and a desktop and synchronize the contents of both so that you always have your data.

Following these guidelines will ensure that the computer novice gets ‘enough’ of a deal and an adequate machine that is fit for purpose without paying through the nose.

Choosing Computer Peripherals

Owen Jones | April 16, 2010

When you’re buying a computer you should think about not just the quality of the internal peripherals, but also the quality of the peripheral ones that either come with it or are available for it to let you to get the most out of the whole multimedia experience.

Computer peripherals, from printers to web cams, are an important segment of our computing lives and behavior, if not the most significant one, depending on our needs and requirements. When you are faced with having to choose components, consider a few aspects before making your purchase: utility, price/quality combination and the function they will need to perform.

So, when purchasing a printer, you have to consider why you are buying it. For instance, if it is meant to be an office printer and it will be mostly used to print out contracts and documents, then the optimum choice is an all-in-one printer that can print, scan and double as a fax machine at the same time. If on the other hand you need a home printer generally to make copies of your digital photos then considering a colour printer is a necessity and maybe you should consider getting a laser one too.

The keyboard and the mouse come first in the computer-user relationship and they also add a trace of individuality to your personal computer. Look for a complete set-up that can include a mouse pad and try to harmonize them with the colour and shape of your computer case – even a clear computer case. These days, optical and wireless mice are the optimum choice, so buying a wireless multimedia keyboard would be a fit too.

These days, clear computer cases are all the rage and they really do look pretty futuristic, depending on how they are lit. These clear computer cases fit really well with a computer on which video games will be played a lot. The clear computer case is usually made of acrylic and is wholly translucent, meaning that all the internal components are visible. The clear computer case is normally ‘themed’, that is it has a prime colour in the acrylic, most often red or blue. The case is then lit up by a string of theme-coloured LEDs which are triggered when particular events take place (for instance, when the CD drive is spinning.

Communication with cherished ones is often done through the Internet. So, why not render it perfect by purchasing a web cam to permit real time interaction between friends and family? In addition, you will need a microphone to be able to hear and see your loved one at the same time and then you can chat as if he or she was in the room with you.

There are numerous kinds of computer components on the market: external hard drives, loud speakers (from small to extremely big), real 5.1 systems, scanners, card readers for your digital camera and loads more. All you have to do is put together a list of the uses you require your PC for and then go shopping for the required peripherals for each of those uses. Whenever those needs can be combined, as with the printer/scanner, you should try to do that to get around taking up a lot of space.

The Various Types Of RC Cars

Owen Jones | April 12, 2010

Radio controlled cars, remote controlled cars or RC cars and trucks are items, with which to have fun. However, many RC hobbyists take their fun very seriously indeed. They want their RC car or truck to be the most realistic or the fastest by tweaking the basic kit and by tuning up the engine. This is not a new phenomenon at all. Hobbyists have been building and racing model cars since the 1940′s. However, these early cars were hamstrung by technology.

In the early days of the hobby, the models had to be manufactured by hand by hobbyists and radio control was ineffective and too dear for home use. Those early models were controlled remotely by wire. Consequently remote controlled model cars could only run the length of the wire, which meant in effect that the car went round and round the handler. It was not until the 1960′s that radio control was available and this meant proper races around a proper race track. The true hobby-cum-sport of model racing was born.

Once the hobby or sport had been opened up by genuine radio control, it became more exciting and it attracted more hobbyists and with them came improvement and commercial interest. This means that the technology involved in radio controlled cars and trucks has come on in leaps and bounds. One aspect worth saying here is that a big differentiation between model cars used to be whether they were remote controlled or radio controlled. Unfortunately, they are both shortened to RC and so the terms are often used arbitrarily these days.

The most popular RC cars for beginners are the electrically driven model cars and trucks. Electric RC cars have to depend on rechargeable batteries for power. This is their main drawback, but being electrically driven also means that the car is cleaner and more responsive to control. Electrically driven cars tend to be lighter and consequently faster. They are cleaner because there is no exhaust. They are easier to maintain, but also less easy to modify. They accelerate extremely quickly

The next step for many RC hobbyists is the Nitro car. Nitro cars are driven by miniature engines which run on a mixture of nitromethane and lubricating oil. These cars are very fast with a fast acceleration. They can reach and maintain higher speeds than electric cars, whose batteries are constantly running down which means less power for speed.

Nitro cars and trucks are loud and smelly. They produce the loud whine that people link with model racing, but they also produce exhaust which means that they cannot be used indoors.

More and more model cars are now using petroleum powered RC cars. These models tend to be the larger ones. These RC cars and trucks have engines that are more familiar to the non-specialist, but they have all the characteristics of an typical car. They produce fumes, noise and are slower to accelerate that the other kinds. However, petrol driven engines will last longer than nitro engines. Because these models are larger, they can take more fuel on board and so travel longer distances.

All three of the above varieties can then be on-road or off-road. On-road cars will be made for racing only and the tyres will be racing tyres and the engines will be finely tuned to attain top speed quickly and maintain it for the duration of the race. On the other hand, off-road RC cars are built for travelling up and down hill over all sorts of geological hazards, so the engine has to have more torque and the tyres have to be able to maintain a good grip. These cars are usually slower.

The last distinguishing feature of the various RC cars is size or more precisely the scale. 1:8 was and still is quite popular. That scale means that for every eight inches of the actual car, the replica is one inch long. Other popular sizes are 1:10 and 1:12, but there is a new class of RC cars and trucks gaining popularity, the monster 1:5 cars and trucks, which are petrol driven.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with gas remote control cars. If you have an interest in model RC vehicles, please go over to our website now at 1/5 Scale RC Cars

Why Get A See-through Computer Case?

Owen Jones | April 6, 2010

What is a translucent computer case and what could it do for you? Well, before we begin chatting about the see-through computer case, permit me to inquire you something: what does your computer?s casing signify to you? I can even ask: what does your computer signify to you? I ask this as your response will ascertain what you would like for your computer and its housing or case.

Most people have always been happy enough with the plain, standard light-grey housing that comes as bog-standard with the preponderance of computers. Some have never even thought about it. But then there are others who have thought about their computer?s case a lot and who would like something special for their computer.

Some of these people were accomplished at metalwork, others at woodwork and a few at glassware and there are a few truly incredible, innovative, homemade cases out there. Especially among the gaming community. However, we are not all so able with our hands, but that does not signify that we have to be stuck with a grey computer case.

The easiest choice, if you want a custom computer casing is to construct one out of acrylic – the sort of substance used to construct the majority of fish tanks. You can buy and easily cut sheets of acrylic for the sides and bond them all together with acrylic resin. That may appear tricky, but it truly is not. In the beginning you would have to research the architecture of a normal computer case and then just copy it in acrylic. You can construct a clear computer casing in a weekend.

Or you could buy a transparent computer housing kit. These kits arrive in flat-packs just like most kitchen furniture and can be effortlessly assembled according to the instructions with a screwdriver. No cutting, no measuring, just a little gentle screwing.

And I signify gentle, as the screws that come with the see-through computer case packs are typically made of acrylic as well and will snap easily. It is the only part of the construction process that requires a warning note, because you don?t want to have to drill out a busted screw, do you? That would only put a downer on your fun.

So why would anyone want a translucent computer case? I think that there are loads of explanations. Some individuals may just want to be different and others may want to show that they can assemble or even create such a housing. However, the clear computer casing also has aesthetic and practical advantages. At least the good ones do.

On the Aesthetic Front: hobbyists add neon lights and small LEDs that twinkle on and off or just glow eerily, possibly activated by a certain occurrence, like a hard drive coming to life. These displays are called ?themes? and are normally red or blue, but can be almost any imaginable colour. Then you can attach coloured fans (or paint your existing ones). You already have at least one fan in your case and probably two or three.

On the Practical Front: loads of individuals like to see what is going on inside their computer housing and it is neither practical nor safe to remove the cover all together. Additionally, making your own transparent computer housing permits you to include more fans as over-heating is the foremost cause of hardware failure. The more fans the better.

A clear computer housing would also allow you to observe whether a fan has failed, which would result in over-heating in a standard casing and certain hardware failure, whereas you would notice it going on through your transparent computer case and replace the fan before serious injury and loss of data might take place.

How To Choose A Computer

Owen Jones | April 5, 2010

It is a great deal easier to buy your next computer than it is to buy your first one, because those who’ve purchased and operated a computer in the past already have an idea of what they require in a new computer, but those who are new to the computer world can easily become confused in the multitude of choices to be had.

The brief answer to “What should I buy?” is “the best”. Of course that response is very personal because “the best” to one person is not going to be the best to another. Our description of “the best” is the fastest and with the biggest memory, but even that can leave the computer newbie perplexed. Here’s a quick rundown of what the computer novice should do and why.

1. Buy a computer that includes all the fundamental peripherals. Every computer system can be broken down into four major components: CPU unit, screen, keyboard, and mouse. For the learner, it’s best to buy a computer that has all of these components included so that when it’s taken home, assembling the computer is a straightforward affair of plugging things in where they belong. Leave the individual purchase of these peripherals to those who have more knowledge.

2. Decide what you’ll use the computer for. If you want to use your computer for investigating the web, sending email, or carrying out straightforward word-processing or spreadsheet tasks, a computer with the main components that we just described plus a printer should be enough. If you want to use a computer to help with a career in multimedia however, you’re going to have to accessorize your system with possibly a scanner, digital camera, tablet, or digicam as well for example. If you want a computer to help with a career in music, you might want a good microphone and set of loud-speakers.

3. Make a budget and stick to it. How much can you afford to spend on a new computer? Although the cost of computers is declining, they can still be quite a hefty expenditure especially if you want further peripherals as described previously. In addition, you’ll need to figure in expenses for Internet access, maintenance, servicing, and insurance.

4. Begin comparison shopping and search for the fastest and largest. By fastest and largest, we mean the computer with the quickest processor, the quickest modem, the largest memory, and the largest hard drive capacity. Even if you think that you’ll never require the amount of speed or space available on the market today, it’s essential to have in case that you truly do require that much in the future. Having such a large reserve will cut down on costs when the time comes to upgrade.

5. Stick with the better-known makes. Going off the trodden path with lesser-known makes is again an exploit for those who have more familiarity with computers. Although those better-known makes might be a tad more expensive, the computer greenhorn will appreciate the comfort of buying a computer from a business that has a lengthy history of building quality products, and that has the finances on hand for satisfying returns, trades, servicing, and guaranties.

6. Pick a good store. Once you have an idea of what you want in a computer and what kind of computer that you want, the only task left to do is to decide on the place where you want to buy it. There are many places, which embrace computer shops, online stores, auction sites and operated computer shops. For the computer greenhorn, we recommend buying a computer from a physical store. In a physical store, you have the opportunity to see the computer of interest itself and ask questions. New computer buyers will also have a store guarantee, returns, trades, and services.

These recommendations ought to give the computer newbie a handy start in choosing a quality computer for the first time and these suggestions apply to either Windows computers or Apple Macintosh computers. After taking these decisions and eventually choosing one that fits your needs, you can then venture into the spellbinding world of software – a world that is just as impressive as the world of hardware!
