Hot Tub Safety Suggestions

Owen Jones | January 1, 2012

Water can be perilous especially for families with small children, so every family with a hot tub ought to have some type of safety policy. This article will give some fundamental hot tub safety pointers that can be adopted by families for the protection of its children and other members.

The first safety tip for hot tubs is never to leave children alone with a hot tub full of water. It is not a question of whether the child can swim or not. Children play, fight and mess about. They could fall over, bang their head, become unconscious and drown. There are a number of scenarios where this could happen and it is just better to not give bad luck an opportunity. Do not allow children in a tub on their own or even anywhere near it if it is full.

It is quite usual to have an alcoholic drink whilst in the hot tub in the evening, but be cautious not to get drunk. It is very dangerous to get out of control or even fall unconscious whilst you are in or in water and this goes doubly for a hot tub because they are so relaxing. The warm water, the soothing motion of the water and excess alcohol or other drugs could lead to you falling asleep and drowning.

However, it is not only while you are in the tub that being drunk is risky, being a bit wobbly is arguably even more dangerous whilst you are getting in or out of the tub because you could fall, bump your head and drown whilst unconscious. Never let anyone use your hot tub if they are drunk or stoned unless there are sober or straight people there too. This rule ought to be applied to those on medication too.

Another danger, be it ever so slight is that of long hair getting sucked into the filtration and cleaning system. If a young child with long hair had its hair sucked into the drain, it could have difficulty getting back above the water line, especially if it panicked. Another reason never to leave children unattended in a pool or spa.

It is a good idea to know how to turn the spa’s motor or pump off quickly, so that if there is problem with hair entanglement, you can release the child by turning the pump off quickly which should release the child.

The electricity leads to the tub will be pretty well protected, especially if it was installed by a professional, but is worth checking every now and again that the cables are all still protected from water, because as we all know, water and electricity do not combine well.

Also bear this in mind if you take any mains powered apparatus like a radio, TV or computer to the spa with you too. Keep all electrical devices well away from the spa and far enough away that they will not get splashed. They can be controlled by a remote device without any danger.

7 Car Valeting Tips

Owen Jones | December 12, 2011

Do you drive about in style or in a sty? Do you take care of your automobile or are you going to wait for it to fall apart and then purchase a new one? Of course it is your car, you do what you like but a tidy car is safer than a grubby one.

If you have cold drink cans and empty crisp packets rolling around the floor, they could interfere with your feet. If you do not keep the exterior clean, rust will set in and your car will be less structurally safe – less able to withstand a collision.

So here are seven tips to help you valet your car. They might not all be life-savers, but they should all alleviate some frustration and make your driving experience a little more pleasant.

1] Keep your windows clean and clear. You need as much forward, rear and peripheral vision as you can. Remove anything dangling from the rear view mirror and swap big speakers on the rear shelf for low, flat ones.

Remove all stickers from the windows especially the dopey one that says: ‘Drive Safely – Baby On Board’. No one is going to drive more carefully because you have a baby with you, that is your job!

2] If your antenna jams, it is better to rub it with graphite powder than to squirt WD40 into it. The oil will merely leak out and what stays will soon have dust sticking to it, which will cause it to stick more.

3] You get better results while cleaning, waxing or polishing, if you spray the liquid onto your cloth rather than onto the car. Spraying directly onto the car causes concentrations in some patches which normally result in smears and lots of extra rubbing, meanwhile abrasive dust can be getting stuck on this surplus and the motion of your cleaning might cause scratches. You also lose less spray to the wind.

4] While cleaning the glass, clean up and down on one side of the glass and side-to-side on the other so that you can see where the smears are. It could save you half the effort.

5] Clean bird droppings from your car as soon as you can. This is because they are very acidic and will damage your paintwork every time they become wet. Never park under a tree because of this and because the rain dripping through the tree, particularly in warm weather, will bring sap or oil from the tree and it is quite difficult to get rid of when it is dry.

6] While washing the exterior with a bucket of soapy water, start on the roof, the bonnet and the boot; change the water and do one side of the car, change the water and do the other. Never throw the left over dirty water in the bucket onto the car or its wheels. This water is filthy, but you frequently see people do it.

7] Wash the engine from time to time. You will be happy you did if ever you have to get under the bonnet. The same goes for the spare wheel and keep an old pair of gloves in the wheel well for when you have to change a wheel.

Installing A Home Theater System

Owen Jones | November 13, 2011

It is sure that the most important consideration in setting up a home theater set-up is the size of the room where you will set up the home theater system. Therefore, the size of the most important part of a home theater set-up, which is the television, is also reliant on the size of the room. Regardless of the size of the room, the minimum suggested size of the screen is 28 inches.

A flat screen television is also suggested, because it will cut down on reflections and glare. Speakers are also dependent on the size of the room. Obviously, you would require more speakers in a very large room than in a small one.

You might want to put a lot of small speakers in a large room or one large speaker in a small room. The acoustics of the room is an important issue in this. Therefore, I recommend that you either get an expert in or get a wireless sound set-up that can be built upon.

The average number of speakers in a starter system in an average sized room would be five or six. The more speakers you use, up to a point, the greater the reality, but lots of speakers also means that you do not need thunderous volume too. There are many considerations when it comes to the sound – far more than with the screen.

You will want surround sound, with woofers, sub woofers, treble and bass speakers all with the Dolby control set-up, probably all controlled by a graphic equalizer. All these controls can be confusing, but once you have the sound right, you will know it. It will sound like a full-sized movie theater.

Another important constituent of your home theater system is the DVD player. Your DVD player really must have a progressive scan. This is because a progressive scan produces sharp and flicker-free pictures. However, the progressive scan facility depends on the television unit, because not all television sets support progressive scan signals.

An possible upgrade might be a five-disk carousel DVD player. All of these things also depend on the amount of money you have, of course. However, if money is short, start with the best DVD player you can afford and use a few old speakers and the biggest television set you can get hold of. Later, you can upgrade the television or the speakers.

The furniture is crucial too. You have to feel as if you are undergoing a special experience. The goal is to have reclining seats, but you can start with large bean bags. Add air conditioning and a fridge for cold drinks and a few tables for nuts and candy and you are almost there.

My concluding touches would be old movie posters, photos of movie stars, a collection of autographs would be great, a replica Oscar and any other memorabilia you can think of. Then set all this off with some subtle lighting that you can raise or dim as required.

Sound, camera, action!

How To Go About Choosing Your Garden Furniture

Owen Jones | November 12, 2011

If you are going to take your garden seriously, there are a couple items that you have to do. This first thing to do is work out a plan of how you want your garden to look like. This is easily done using graph paper or the more artistic may choose to draw it. Then you have to landscape your garden according to your plan, although you can adjust your plan as you go. After all, you are the boss. Put in any electric leads and water pipes that you might require. Erect your shed and greenhouse, if required then you can begin planting and start to choose your garden furniture.

The point of this article is to help you select your garden furniture. There is so much diversity of garden furniture that it can be quite difficult to make up your mind. Do you go for hardwood, softwood, metal or plastic?

Which colour and which style? Some of your choice will be restricted, if you are on a budget, but in reality, over the long term of twenty or thirty years, hardwood is the cheapest alternative and plastic the most expensive. Over the short term, two to five years, the opposite is the case.

Whether you want armchairs or recliners is really up to you and so outside the scope of this article, so is the style that you prefer, although I will say that the most successful choice of garden furniture should blend in with the garden rather than stick out like a sore thumb. Plastic tends to look OK on a patio or deck, but rarely goes well with a garden full of pretty flowers and bushes, whereas hardwood garden furniture tends to fit in well anywhere. You need to be a bit careful with softwood and metal.

In a way, it is a good idea to tackle choosing your garden furniture in the your same way that you would choose the furniture for inside your home. It has to blend in with your overall style.

Therefore, you might want to put off purchasing your garden furniture until you get your first crop of flowers up, unless you can imagine it in your mind. The only trouble with waiting for Spring is that that is when garden furniture is at its most expensive.

Ask yourself what you intend doing in the area where you are planning putting your furniture. Are you and the family just going to flop there after work and on weekends or are you going to hold more formal garden parties there? If you are going to have guests, it ought to be big enough for the number you expect and the furniture should be robust enough so that it will not collapse under some of the larger guests. If it is just for the family at least you are dealing with known information: how big they are and how many of them there are.

Another aspect to bear in mind is maintenance. Plastic does not possess to be maintained, but it will perish – become brittle – after a couple of hot summers and cold winters. You can lengthen the life of your plastic garden furniture by keeping it in a shed when not in use. Metal garden furniture may require anti-rust treatment from time to time and if the seat is made of cloth, you should also check for signs of rot, which could lead to someone falling through the seat.

Softwood needs to be treated with preservative, paint, varnish or oil fairly frequently and you should check for signs of rot or splitting, which can still occur no matter how much you take care of it. Hardwood garden furniture has to be treated once a year as well, but it is by far the most robust material used for making garden furniture.

Plastic and metal furniture are available in many colours; softwood can be painted or stained any colour you like and hardwood is available in all shades of brown from light oak to rich dark mahogany, but it should never be painted only oiled and stained, if you want to.

If you choose hardwood, it can be a bit hard on the backside after a few hours, so buy a few cushions that match the colour and style of your garden furniture as well. These can be stored inside when not in use or they will become unbelievably dirty and if they get wet it can take days for them to dry, during which time they may begin to rot and smell. Removable cushion covers are a decent idea.

How To Care For Your Koi Carp After A Storm

Owen Jones | July 21, 2011

A storm can be distressing for your outdoor fish, especially for large koi carp, which, being large, probably do not have many places to hide. However, if you have designed your koi fish pond well, you will have taken this into account when your constructed the pond. Similarly, the pond must be deep enough for your fish to be able to get well below the choppy surface layer.

If you prepared for the storm, you possibly put a net over the fish pond, so the first thing you need to do after the storm is clear up any fallen debris and take away the net, so that you can get a good look at your fish and what occurred to them. They may be a bit stressed, so move unhurriedly and try hard not to frighten them. Stress is a killer in the animal world as well as in ours.

Did you take the added safeguard of sand-bagging the rim of your pond to stop it over-flowing and the fish swimming away? If so, take away the sand bags, so that you can get a better look.

Now you can get a good look at the upheaval, if there is any. Use a net to quietly skim off any leaves that have blown under the netting and onto the pond. If any plants have been uprooted, put them back where they should be. In general, put the pond back as it used to be, so that the fish feel at home. Again, move unhurriedly and try not to put your fish under any more stress.

If you have to carry out major structural repairs, you could put your koi in a child’s plastic paddling pool until you can sort the issue out. Put the pool in a shaded area and fold the netting over it several times so that the fish can not get out and cats and birds cannot get in. If you can aerate the pool with a pump so much the better.

Put a few plants in there with them for cover and feed in moderation. if the repairs will take a long time, you could ask your local pet store to take them away for a week or whatever. You will need to pay board and lodgings, but it is preferable to losing your prized koi carp.

Once any repairs have been carried out, you ought to check the water quality, which could have been changed by debris falling into the pond or by your repairs. Rain, especially acid rain, can have quite an effect, especially if it rained for a long time.

First check the water for nitrates. If the levels are unacceptable (see the testing kit for details), you ought to normalize them. If the levels are extremely high, first remove the plants from the water.

Then test the KH levels. If they are low, say, below 100, then you could add a cup of baking soda per 1,000 gallons of water and check again. Whatever you do, the quickest way to de-stress your fish is to restore their environment to what it used to be with clean water to swim in.
