Martial Arts Tuitition For Kids

Owen Jones | August 21, 2011

All individuals should know how to defend themselves. They always used to, especially before the advent of the police force. Before there was a police force, there was chaos and it was every man for himself. Men defended themselves and their family from all types of thieves, muggers and rapists for millenia normally with a sword or a stick.

There is much less violence on the streets now than there was 200 years ago, but there is still too much and so many people still feel the requirement to be able to defend themselves. Many people turn to martial arts and the best time to take up martial arts is when you are young.

And this is happening as well. Many parents are afraid for three reasons: 1] that their kids will undergo bullying at school 2] that they will get harassed on the streets by predators or 3] that they will become obese. Martial arts are the best solution to all these worries. Practicing martial arts can burn 300-450 calories per hour.

But the advantages of learning martial arts do not stop there. Martial arts has a normalizing effect on people. It raises the self-confidence of the introverted and timid, but it also teaches bullies that there is always someone better too. It teaches self-disciple, self-defence and self-confidence. It makes the weak robust and the fat thin. It is a life coach.

If your youngster wants to learn a martial art or indeed mixed martial arts, the first thing to do is decide on which style is the one for the child. You could start doing this by watching videos on the differen styles. Not films with stories where everything is scripted, but documentary films.

The main ones to look at are: boxing, wrestling, karate, muay Thai, tae kwon do, jiu jitsu and judo. There are others, but it is best to find a general sort first, because some need more speed, energy, agility or power than others. Some mental and physical attributes are more suitable to one discipline than another.

Once you have a style in mind, you can start searching for a gym or dojo that teaches it. Check out the safety record and the facilities of any that you fancy and talk to the instructors. It is also vital that your child will become able to go to the groups, so you will need a dojo that is open after school hours and most of the weekend. Most of them are, but it is worth checking.

It is practical if the dojo will give private lessons to students who either fall behind or who are better than their colleagues. Once into the sport, you child might decide that he or she would rather have done a different one, check to see if that is possible without losing what you have already paid in advance charges.

Every child ought to be encouraged, but not forced, to at least attempt a martial art, because it will give them a helpful interest for life that will make their hearts, minds and bodies strong for life.

Dealing With Stress

Owen Jones | October 12, 2010

We all know that stress is at a very high level for the vast majority of people and most of us have our own ways of coping with this stress. However, for those who do not know how to deal with stress, it is doubtless first useful to appreciate what stress is and how it can manifest itself.

Stress is most simply defined as: “A mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external influences and capable of affecting physical health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression” (TheFreeDictionary.com).

There are many reasons why stress can come about, but the most frequent types of stress come from finances, family, work, school, quarrels with friends and driving. The most stressful predicaments, however, are divorce, the death of a parent or spouse, moving house and swapping job or school.

Since the causes of stress are so varied, it is beneficial to be able to determine where your stress is coming from, so that you know how to treat or prevent it. You have to get to know yourself to cope with your stress, because not all people react in the same way to stress.

For example, actors and top-flight business people often say that they need the buzz of stress to give their best performances. They have obviously learned how to exploit stress to their own advantage whether unconsciously or by other methods. People who suffer from stress need to get to that phase.

When you have worked out what is causing your stress, you have a chance of counteracting it. In fact, you have many chances of dealing with it. If the source of the stress is your work, you might like to go for a drink with colleagues after work to talk things through once or twice a week, as long as you do not let it get out of hand and affect your family and your work.

Otherwise, you may go for a massage or a sauna or take regular weekend breaks either for pure relaxation or to follow a particular hobby such as hiking. In fact, a hobby of some kind is generally a good stress-reliever, even if the hobby itself is stressful. Just changing the routine seems to help a lot of people. Some people turn to shopping and beauty salons.

A weekend picnic, communing with nature, or rambling are other key de-stressers. The point is that you have to find something that suits you. For instance, I work alone all day and hate shopping, so when I have done my bit, I seek out company to have a conversation. My wife on the other hand spends all day with people, and likes to water the garden alone at the end of her working day.

Other major stress relievers are sports – either watching them or playing them. Playing is clearly healthier than watching, but given that stress is a major killer in the West, the reduction of stress is the main concern. Yoga and meditation are a fantastic compromise between being active and passive in your coping with stress.

Losing Weight Fast

Owen Jones | June 17, 2010

Other than physical appearance, weight affects a person in various ways. It could be the overall quality of life, self-confidence, depression, health risks, and physical incapabilities. There are a lot of advantages to losing weight. It is for this reason that a lot of people are searching for a weight loss technique that will trim down those excess pounds and get a beautiful, jaw-dropping body.

The first thing that an over-weight person should do is seek a doctor to recommend the best weight loss program. This will be done after a full physical examination, which leads to the determination of a proprietary weight loss technique. To shed excess pounds fast and effectively, four aspects of one’s life has to be changed: what to eat, how to eat, behavior and activity level.

Below are some fast recommendations that can change an over-weight person’s life:

1: Fast weight loss consists of a multi-faceted plan that comprises mindset, exercise, and, in some cases, dietary supplements. Commence by studying a diet regimen that can be easily adopted into your current lifestyle. Follow an exercise plan that requires at least fifteen minutes a day brisk walking, running, swimming and/or dancing.

2: Set yourself achievable targets. The ability to focus and have a proper mental outlook allows a person on a diet to quickly shed those extra pounds. You have to develop discipline and a proper mind set, a dieter will never get disheartened and pack the diet in

3: Listen to what your body is saying. Every person’s body behaves differently to different fast weight loss programs. Swap one plan for another to assess the body’s reaction. The exercise program ought to be suited to one’s body, because some can not exercise as rigorously as others. If walking is all that you can do, then walk, for this is one of the best exercises. Don’t forget that muscles burn calories, so try to put on a little more muscle – it looks good too.

4: Eat more fibre because it makes a person feel full sooner and stays in the stomach longer, slowing down the rate at which you will want to eat again. For example whole grain bread will remain in the body longer and stave off hunger longer than white bread, which converts to sugars faster. giving you a quick sugar spike, which soon passes, leaving you hungry again.

5: Stay away from fried food especially deep-fried, since it contains a lot of fat. However, although fish and chicken are considered to be far leaner than beef, these white meats can contain even more fat than beef if it is fried. It is recommended that those on a strict diet choose grilled food, as it does not contain much fat after the food has been cooked.

6: Take in lots of fluid. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body ‘flushing’ and because weight loss depends on how the body gets rid of bodily waste, the body has to stay hydrated.

All in all, discipline and consistency is still the best practice and the key to rapid weight loss success. Light dieting, workout, and the right amount of supplementation applied in a regular way everyday will result in a quicker weight loss than having a massive action campaign that is only followed by a return to the bad old habits, as this would only lead to gaining more weight than before the diet was started.

What Are Fad Diets?

Owen Jones | May 27, 2010

A fad diet is a trendy diet plan that promises to help you lose weight usually in a comparatively short time. A fad diet frequently attracts a lot of media coverage, which then attracts a large number of overweight people to try it in order to get back in shape. Fad diets are frequently quickly discredited, but they keep raising their head from time to time.

The grapefruit diet was or is an instance of a fad diet. People wanted to believe that you could lose weight just by eating. The food in this instance was grapefruits, but there is also a cabbage diet. The problem with these fad diets is that their slimming effect is only temporary, because you cannot eat no more than cabbage or grapefruit for the rest of your life, so the weight comes back as soon as you go back to normal.

‘If you always do what you always done, you will always get what you always got’ is a true saying. But what is worse is that a lot of of these diets can be injurious to your health.

However, do not think that fad diets are a new phenomenon. Fad diets or fad medicines have an ancient history going back to fake witch doctors, medicine men and quack doctors who doubled as barbers! Fad practitioners have a prolonged and scandalous history but they are still alive and doing very well, thank you very much, today.

These days, medicine is too tightly regulated for them, so they have turned their attention to susceptible, despondent dieters. Most of those that take up a fad diet are overweight teens longing to look like their favourite film star.

Fad diets usually concentrate on reducing or completely cutting out carbohydrates. It is the low intake of carbohydrates that brings about the rapid loss of weight. In fact, this rapid loss is due to the quick loss of water that these low-carb diets stimulate. Much of the fat might still be there, so that when you stop the diet, your body regains its normal amount of water and the lost weight is put back on just as fast as it was discarded.

In the normal course of events, carbohydrates are the source of energy for work and exercise, but with these fad diets, the carbs are no longer there, so the body begins to break down its store of fat. This may appear advantageous but it is not necessarily so. The ketones resulting from the breakdown of fat are excreted via urine and often increased volumes of urine, which can result in dehydration. People with certain medical conditions have to be very careful too; diabetics, for example.

Fad diets are popular, but they can be very detrimental to your body and when they do not have the desired result in the long-term, it can be very depressing leading to comfort eating. This is why many people begin a fad diet, lose weight and are radiant for a month or two, but then slip back when they are approaching their ideal weight. They go back to their old ways and the weight begins to come back. They become depressed, convinced that they will never be able to lose weight; they comfort eat some more, maybe giving up any hope of achieving a normal weight permanently.

Disappointment and Rapid Weight

Owen Jones | April 21, 2010

It is a good idea to set yourself targets, if you want to achieve a goal. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about this. For instance, if you are a size 14 and you spend a fair bit of money on some beautiful size 8 dresses as motivation, you will probably feel quite cheesed off if you are not wearing them a month later.

It is not a good idea to make yourself feel awful, so the right way to have done this would have been to set smaller, more easily achievable, less expensive goals. A consequence of disappointing yourself like that could be depression or / and desperation and desperation to meet your targets can lead to foolish decisions.

Foolish decisions like following a fad diet, because it promises you rapid weight loss. There is no such thing as sustainable rapid weight loss without a change of lifestyle. Yes, you can go for surgery and have lumps cut off yourself or you can pump yourself full of diuretics and squeeze the water out of yourself, but the weight will come back, unless you change the way you live.

Any diet that promises rapid weight loss without recommending a healthier, more active lifestyle is doubtful. Many of these kinds of diet are fad diets. The organizers of these diets are only interested in selling you magic potion drinks or powders as meal substitutes. I have even seen one company selling magnetic earrings which were ‘guaranteed’ to make you lose weight, if you dieted and did more exercise!

Of course you will lose weight if you diet and exercise, but carrying the earrings around with you is not helping. It just adds to the depression when you read in the newspaper that the guru you have been following is outed as a con artist.

Here are a few tell-tale signs to help you spot a phony diet:

Any diet that requires you to miss meals should start red lights flashing. If you stop eating, you are reducing the number of calories you are consuming, so you can expect to lose weight. That is not rocket science. You do not need to pay for advice like that.

However, this tactic does not necessarily work either. If you skip a meal, your blood/sugar levels will drop and that has different consequences for different people, but none of them are good. It will also increase the likelihood that you will overeat at the next meal. It would be better to eat a salad, an apple or a banana instead.

Any weight loss program that says you can lose weight without exercising or without dieting is definitely dodgy too, because exercise is essential for good blood circulation and metabolism, which are vital to your losing weight and living healthily.

However, exercise alone will not guarantee good health, you have to diet too. In this context ‘dieting’ just means eating healthily.

You do not have to wear anything special to lose weight either. Electric vibrating belts, magnetic earrings, sweat-inducing cummerbunds and the like, do not work. Full stop. They do not work and in a similar vein, powder and liquid substitutes are not worth it either. Get a liquidizer and make your own or just eat properly.
